Auburn is pretty darn good. But that was not just bad, but historically bad for Ohio State today.
Worst margins of all time for our basketball Buckeyes:
1. 1956 at 6) Illinois 111-64 (47-point loss) At the time, this was the most points OSU basketball had ever allowed in a game, and the Bucks also scored their season low with 64.
2. 1930 at Purdue 60-14 (46-point loss) No other opponent put over 38 points through the peach basket on the Buckeyes that season.
3. 1964 at BYU 112-71 (41-point loss) The Bucks took a major step back in 1964-65 after 5 straight Big Ten titles, finishing just 12-12 with some bad losses in this season. By 1968 they'd be back in the Final Four.
4. 1965 at 1) Michigan 100-61 (39-point loss) We got 'em back by beating 1) Mich in the season finale at St. John, 93-85 to hand them their only Big Ten loss though. (This was the same season that included the BYU loss above.)
5T. 1920 at Purdue 63-25 (38-point loss) Only two other opponents eclipsed the 40-point mark on the Buckeyes that year. Tough loss for Buckeye fans who were still reeling from the start of prohibition two months earlier.
5T. 1994 at 12) Purdue 101-63 (38-point loss) What's that you say, Big Dawg Robinson, Jimmy Jackson has left and gone away, hey, hey, hey. :(
5T. 2024 vs. 2) Auburn 91-53 (38-point loss)
If you like your glass half full, 3 of those top 4 came with two of the greatest coaches in OSU history on the sidelines: Harold Olsen (who would invent the NCAA tournament and lead us to 4 Final Fours and 5 Big Ten titles) and Fred Taylor (who would win the NC, would win 7 Big Ten titles, and would lead the Bucks to 4 Final Fours). Matta came close as well, losing by 35 at Maryland in 2016.
Not suggesting by ANY means that any of that suggests anything for Diebler - especially off of a similar dismal loss at Maryland.
Hoping for better times ahead.
