2017 is the 75th anniversary of Ohio State's first national championship season. To honor the achievement, this series will post articles from the Columbus Citizen Journal on the day they ran in 1942.

The Citizen Journal dishes new information on Buckeye injuries, a 60-minute man and "Pappy" the "dean" of the Western Conference. An ad for OOP also returns to the fish wrap.

Injuries
Sedor and Frye

Coach Paul Brown showed pictures of the Purdue game to the Buckeye gridders last night and then handed out plans for both an offense and a defense against the dangerous Northwestern team to be met next Saturday on their home grounds in Evanston, Ill.

"The pictures reveal," Brown disclosed, "that their power attack was functioning so perfectly against Purdue mainly because the Boilermakers were using a looping line against us. We'd smack one of their men to keep him from completing his movement, the man beside him would mover over, and there'd be a gaping hole for our backs to prance through."

The real thing that caused furrows in Brown's brow, however, was the appearance of the old injury jinx that has plagued the team throughout the season. Even while Dante Lavelli, sophomore first-string right end still nurses his twisted knee, the injury bug has struck again and Bill Sedor showed up at practice nursing an injured leg that interferes with his running.

Looks like Brown's chances at defeating Northwestern just became a bit more difficult. It gets worse, Lavelli and Sedor aren't the only hurt players.

Two New Injuries

It is doubtful whether Lavelli will be ready for service at all this week and with Sedor's recovery problematical, it seems that much of the left-end duty will fall upon another sophomore, John White. Sedor will start if he is able, in all probability, but otherwise it will be white.

In addition, Bob Frye who has been playing some fine football substituting for Les Horvath at right halfback had a groin injury last night and couldn't run either. Bill Durtschl, ace punter on the squad and third-string halfback, is still on crutches so it will mean that Horvath will have a heavy load to carry against the Wildcats with only Tom Cleary, an inexperienced player but a long kicker, to back him up.

If Paul Brown shared Jim Tressel's punting philosophy, he would be heading to the pharmacy and picking up the strongest anti-anxiety pills he could find.

The only other man on the casualty list is Don Steinberg, junior left end, who still nurses a bruised shoulder that he received in the game against Indiana. It has been responding only slowly to the treatments of Trainer Ernie Biggs and it still uncertain the he will be ready for service.

There are not as many injuries on the entire squad in total numbers, but there are two left ends and tow right halfbacks who are hurt and both positions are left in the hands of only one man. Sixty-minute men, especially 60-minute men who are built like Horvath at 165 pounds, are the exception rather than the rule in Western Conference play.

Brown is out to guide his team to a win Saturday in order to even the score with Coach Lynn Waldorf whose team placed the only defeat on the Buckeye record last year in the first season under the new Buckeye coach.

Les Horvath is going to be one tired Buckeye after the end of this game as it appears he will be on the field for every play.

Waldorf Coaching Dean

Waldorf is starting his eighth season at Northwestern and that number of years makes him the dean of  Western Conference coaches in point of service. His teams have won 33 games, lost only 19 and tied four in his regime.

He is one of the most efficient coaches in the game both in teaching fundamentals and in conducting practice sessions that move along without a hitch. He and his assistants know just exactly what they want to accomplish before they go on the field each afternoon, and then take the shortest way to the accomplishment of those objectives.

His record at Northwestern has been full of high points. In his first year there he guided his team to a 14-7 victory over Notre Dame, the first Wildcat victory over the Irish in 33 years. In '36, Waldorf piloted his team through an undefeated season climaxed by the 6-0 upset win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers then at the height of power under Coach Bernie Bierman.

Enjoyable Football

Despite his thoroughness and success, Waldorf is still a firm believer in the idea that his teams should enjoy playing the game. Aside from football, Waldorf's main interests are his books and his family, he's affectionately called "Pappy" by players, and his daily game of handball, his only athletic diversion.

Although his team has won only one game in four starts this season, it held the Iowa Cadets to a one-touchdown margin, beat Texas, class of the southwest in an inter-sectional game, lost by one slim point to an inspired Purdue eleven, and pushed Michigan all over the field last week only to bog down when in scoring territory.

The main offensive weapon is the passing attack. Otto Graham mans the guns firing to a pair of six-foot two-inch ends. Bob Motl and Bud Hasse. He completed 36 passes in 75 attempts last year for a total of 579 yards, racked up 20 completions in 29 tries against the Wolverines last week for 295 yards, and is now sufficiently warmed up that the Buckeyes may really see something.
