2025 cornerback Jordyn Woods flips from Cincinnati and commits to Ohio State.
Watching the game yesterday had me thinking, and fuming at times, about some of the struggles that we all saw. First off I will give credit where it's due and the defense adapted and improved. They're the reason we won yesterday for sure. There were 2 things I kept wondering why they weren't doing with the offense.
1. As much as most of us don't really care to hear the name Tom Herman, he did something with his offense that this team should definitely implement. When it's 2nd, 3rd or 4th and 1 or 2 he'd have the offense hurry up and snap the ball as fast as they could with the same formation. This gave the offense 3 distinct advantages. 1. The defense couldn't substitute. 2. The defense doesn't get time to get completely set. 3. The defense doesn't get time to make adjustments to what they see. This was super effective under Herman and was why we were one of the best 3rd down offenses in the country under him. We were 1-10 on 3rd down yesterday and 4 or 5 of those failed conversions were on 3rd and short. We lined up, gave them time to get set and adjust and then still ran the ball the same way. Why not just speed up the process? As we saw during that time it can lead to breaking big runs too like Zeke did.
2. The thing that helped make Chip Kelly's offenses so effective at Oregon was how fast he ran it. They were notorious for snapping the ball every 14 seconds or something close to that. This again gave them the advantage of catching the defense out of position and unprepared for what was coming. This would also help our inexperienced o line in that they would be catching the not set and not getting fresh players into the game. We have an experienced qb and more than enough talent to pull it off. We ran it a couple times against Oregon with good success. I just feel like it would suit our offense better and help the inexperienced o line to run a more hurry up offense.
These were the 2 things that kept popping into my head while watching the offense yesterday. Even Gus Johnson and Joel Klatt kept commenting on the short yardage plays being called. Klatt numerous times said to just sneak it with Howard every time which would probably be better than what we ran yesterday.
