Came across the news a few moments ago, sad report from the boxing world that Sweet Pea Whitaker was struck and killed Sunday.

Via CNN:

"Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker, considered one of the greatest lightweight boxers of all time, died Sunday after he was hit by a vehicle in Virginia, police said.

He was 55 years old."

Big fan of Sweet Pea back in the day, and he had a good following in the boxing world and from his hometown of Norfolk, Va. I enjoyed watching him fight live once while stationed there, and he had some great bouts with Buddy McGirt, Julio Cesar Chavez, Wilfredo Rivera, Oscar de la Hoya, among others.

RIP, Champ.
