Well I guess I was wrong about being locked into #3. Ridiculously improbable upset of the Steelers followed by Brandon Allen out dueling Deshaun Watson for the first road win of the Zac Taylor era has moved the Bengals to be tied in the 5/6 slots. They currently have a easier strength of schedule by .004% so it will be extremely close based on what happens this week. The Eagles beating WFT will secure #5, the Falcons beating Tampa moves us up a spot and the Texans beating the Titans moves us up another spot. All 3 are unlikely but hopefully atleast one is able to happen.
First, Penei Sewell is still a decent possibility at #5. Jacksonville is taking Trevor at #1. The Dolphins at #3 invested heavily in the OL last draft. Their starting LT/RT were drafted in the first and second rounds last year and after starting as rookies I can imagine the Dolphins replacing them with the #3 pick. Jamarr Chase or Micah Parson would be the pick. The Falcons at #4 have Jake Matthews at LT and drafting Sewell to be the RT may be redundant for a bad team. The Falcons have a terrible secondary, defensive line, and may(should) even consider QB with a 35 year old Matt Ryan. It would be a shock if those teams drafted Sewell.
The two teams to watch are the Jets and Eagles. The Jets are in an odd place with Sam Darnold. He hasnt shown much but he is younger than Joe Burrow and with how much money/draft picks the Jets have they could decide to try to build around him. He has never had good pieces around him or good coaching. Mehki Becton is a really good LT as a rookie and they could either elect to have two great OTs or draft other pieces. They could also decide to draft another QB. The Eagles are also in an interesting spot at OT. Their LT is a former first rounder in Andre Dillard who is currently in his second year. Their RT is Lane Johnson who just received a $12 million signing bonus. Johnson's contract isnt great for the Eagles but he is a good RT. With how many problems the Eagles have I dont think it would be very efficient to cut Lane Johnson and a use a top 5 pick to replace him, CB/S/LB/IOL are all much bigger needs for the Eagles. With all that being said I think all of these teams would benefit from trading down to a team that would pay alot to get a franchise LT like Penei Sewell.
Draft simulation-
- Round 1-#6-This for some reason has the Bengals at #6 but either way its a worse case scenario. This scenario has Penei Sewell available in what is a dream. Like I explained above this is still a good possibility. The Jets went with Justin Fields. The Dolphins defensive minded head coach took Micah Parsons, The Falcons took Gregory Rousseau to replace their free agent EDGE defenders, and the Eagles took Patrick Surtain to fill in their awful secondary outside of Darrius Slay. This leaves the Bengals with the exact player they wanted all along to go with the positive momentum from the big wins at the end of the year.
- Round 2-Marvin Wilson DT FSU-Fully expect the Bengals to move on from Geno and having Wilson be a guy who can play both 1/3 tech is a really good option. He is a great athlete with great size but isnt a super explosive pass rusher. Has also had serious injury problems missing the end of both 2019/2020.
- Round 3-Quincy Roche EDGE Miami-Pure edge pass rusher. Carl Lawson has been the only reliable pass rusher this year and being able to add Roche would give the Bengals another option besides him. Hubbard/Lawson/Roche on the outside with Reader/Wilson on the inside is a really nice rebuild of the defensive line.
Draft Simulation without Sewell available. This is worst case scenario, Jets draft Sewell, and the Eagles take Jamarr Chase instead of Patrick Surtain.
- #6-Kyle Pitts TE Florida-cant draft a corner, QB, EDGE, or slot receiver so almost have to draft Pitts. Rashawn Slater may be the next best option but at only 6'3" it could be tough drafting an OT that small this early. Pitts is a rarity as a receiving tight end who would give Burrow a third option that was desperately needed. Sample is an elite blocker and average receiver which makes this pick a little less exciting. Not a bad pick but much worse than getting Sewell or Chase
- Round 2-Dillon Radunz OT NDSU-Replacement for Bobby Hart at RT. Radunz was dominant at NDSU. This draft is very good for OL and being able to wait to get a starting caliber RT in the second could pan out well if the first round pick could potentially go better. Radunz is a dominant run blocker but his pass blocking technique isnt where you would want which pushes him to the second round. On day 1 he is better than Bobby Hart but the upside in pass blocking improvement makes him a great pick.
