With our playoff run coming to an end, I figured we should start a new thread. Big offseason full of questions coming for the Cavs and it will be interesting to see how the team changes over the next few months.
Until that time starts though, we can speculate all we want here. So what would be your realistic dream offseason for the Cavs?
I'm gonna leave the "draft Bronny and LeBron comes back for the MLE to play with his son" in the pipe-dream category for now, and while I still think the Cavs could use a new voice at coach, it's clear JB gets the guys to play hard for him and I think he likely did enough through the first two rounds to hold off the axe for another season. So here is my dream offseason:
- Mitchell signs a max extension.
- Garland is traded to the Spurs who desperately want a young PG to pair with Wemby. He is dealt for Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, and a future lottery protected pick or several seconds.
- Allan, Niang, Ty Jerome, and a pair of seconds are traded to the Pelicans for Brandon Ingram. The Pels have been after Allan for two years now. Here is there chance.
- Use the MLE to sign Tyus Jones, or another backup point guard who can shoot and distribute.
- Resign Marcus Morris and Isaac Okoro. This will probably be the biggest point of contention people have with my list, but letting Okoro walk does nothing for you other than opening a roster spot. The Cavs are over the cap, so it's not like letting Okoro walk will allow them to spend that money somewhere else. The money you give him is a use it or lose it situation and I'd rather use it. He's still only 23 years old. If he continues to develop he becomes a great investment. If he doesn't, someone will be willing to trade for an elite defender. Signing him is a low risk move. Morris may have been a flash in the pan in game 5, but he provides an edge that this team is missing and he has shown to be a guy who is ready to play regardless of receiving stable minutes. The end of the bench can use a guy like that.
- Draft Kel'el Ware, from Indiana. Athletic center who's player comp is Jarrett Allan. He is a quality rim protector, athletic enough to defend, and has a shot that's good enough that he could develop NBA range.
Starters: PG - Mitchell, SG - Strus, SF - Vassell, PF - Ingram, C - Mobley
2nd Team: PG - Jones, SG - LeVert, SF - Okoro, PF - Wade/Sochan, C - Ware
End of Bench: Porter Jr, Merrell, Morris
(In your scenarios, if you say "fire JB", give a replacement candidate. I honestly have no idea what would serve as a realistic upgrade there, so I'd like to hear opinions)
