Ohio State men's athletics won the 2017 Capital One Cup, the school announced Thursday.
The Capital One Cup is like the Directors Cup, in which Ohio State finished second to Stanford, in that it ranks schools' "cumulative on-field performances." The Capital One Cup, however, gives more weight to popular sports whereas the Directors Cup weighs each sport equally.
“It is a banner day for our men’s athletics program and our university as a whole,” Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said in a statement. “Each year, our student-athletes work hard to put forth their best performances and we’re pleased to see their efforts recognized with this honor.
"We will proudly display our Capital One Cup trophy on the University’s shelves, and we would like to thank Capital One for investing in our student-athletes.”
Stanford took home the women's trophy. Both schools will receive a combined $400,000 in scholarships to be awarded at the ESPYS on July 12 in Los Angeles.
Stanford men actually led Ohio State after fall and winter seasons, but the Buckeyes bounced over top of the Cardinal with a volleyball national championship, a national title game appearance in lacrosse, and a top-10 finish in tennis.
