One of college basketball's top transfers will choose between Arizona and Ohio State this week.
According to Matt Norlander of CBS Sports, Oakland graduate transfer Trey Townsend will commit to the Wildcats or Buckeyes before Sunday. Norlander’s report comes after Townsend canceled his visit to Michigan State due to Omaha transfer forward Frankie Fidler’s commitment on Tuesday.

This past season, Townsend averaged 17.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists for Oakland and earned Horizon League Player of the Year honors. Across four seasons with the Golden Grizzlies, the 6-foot-6, 212-pound forward appeared and started in 129 games, collecting 14.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.3 steals per contest.
Townsend scored at will in some of Oakland’s regular-season and postseason matchups in 2023-24. In his team’s season-opening loss to Ohio State, he scored 17 points and added nine rebounds. He also recorded 38 points in Oakland’s Horizon League Tournament championship win over Milwaukee and 30 points in the Golden Grizzlies’ NCAA Tournament loss to N.C. State.
Townsend visited Columbus over the weekend and spent time with head coach Jake Diebler and his staff. If Townsend commits to Ohio State, he and San Diego State transfer Micah Parrish could help replace the wing production of Jamison Battle and Scotty Middleton from the previous Buckeyes squad. He also could compete with Evan Mahaffey and Devin Royal to start at either the small forward or power forward positions.
