Before descending upon Columbus, the members of Select '17 have one final shot at glory under the Friday night lights.

NATIONAL CHAMPS?

Friday night's game between Las Vegas, Nevada, Bishop Gorman and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, St. Thomas Aquinas was considered the most-anticipated high school matchup of all-time, and it most definitely lived up to its billing.

The Gaels, led by Ohio State commits Tate Martell, Tyjon Lindsey and Haskell Garrett, eked out a 25-24 triple-overtime win over pledge Trevon Grimes and the Raiders.

Aquinas, which had allowed only six points in its previous three games, kept Gorman out of the end zone for three quarters. Thus, the Raiders were able to take a 7-3 lead when Mike Harley found Grimes on a wide receiver reverse pass for a 53-yard touchdown.

Harley attempted to find Grimes in the end zone again on the first play of the fourth quarter, but Ohio State target Bubba Bolden made his second interception of the game to keep the Raiders off the board. To make matters worse, Grimes was injured on the play.

The five-star wideout was taken to the hospital with an air cast on his left leg, but all indications are that the injury is not as serious as first believed.

With the momentum on its side, Gorman drove down to field in 10 plays to take the lead on a 16-yard, back-foot pass from Martell to tight end Brevin Jordan.

After kicking a field goal with no time left on the clock to send the game to overtime, Florida quarterback commit Jake Allen threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to give Aquinas the lead. Martell responded on fourth-and-eight, finding wideout Jalen Nailor sliding across the end zone to tie the score at 17-all.

Gorman then went three-and-out on its subsequent drive, which meant that Aquinas only had to kick a field goal to end the Gaels' 44-game winning streak. Bolden jumped over the line and partially blocked the kick, however, forcing the third overtime period.

Martell found Nailor again from five-yards out to cut the lead to 24-23, and Gorman was set to attempt the extra point when Aquinas jumped offside. One yard closer to pay dirt, Gaels coach Kenny Sanchez decided to go for two and the win.

“We've played in some great games over the years, but that was probably the best,” Sanchez told USA TODAY Sports. “That was so much fun. Win or lose, it would have been fun. But I'm definitely glad we pulled it out.”

With the win, Martell moves to 34-0 as a starting quarterback.

STANDING STRONG

While his future teammates lined up to win the game on a two-point conversion, Ohio State commit Chase Young found himself on the other end of the equation against St. John's of Washington D.C.

Down 14-13, the Cadets lined up for a two-point conversion that would have given them the lead with just over 3 minutes remaining in the contest. But Young and the DeMatha defense had other ideas.

“I didn't think they could score on us in that little time left because they have to run the ball on us,” St. John's head coach Joe Casemento told The Washington Post after the game. “We were a yard and a half away. I got some good kids up front and I said, 'Let's win it now.' I take full responsibility for it. It's my call. I felt we could get it, and we didn't execute the play.”

And who could blame him? St. John's hasn't beaten Washington Catholic Athletic Conference foe DeMatha since 1994.

GUESS WHO'S BACK?

Ohio State cornerback commit Amir Riep had played only six quarters this season for Cincinnati Colerain after tweaking his hamstring in second game of the season against St. Xavier, but was cleared to return for the Cardinals' 30-16 win over Mason on Friday night.

Riep played sparingly in the game, recording only two pass breakups, as coaches look to ease him back into the lineup. Colerain is considered the top team in Ohio and sixth-best team in the country by USA TODAY Sports, so keeping its best defender healthy for the stretch run is paramount.
