Ohio State will be without its starting placekicker when it opens its 2016 season.
Sean Nuernberger is set to miss the Bowling Green game due to a groin injury, Urban Meyer said Monday. Expect senior walk-on Tyler Durbin to handle the kicking duties Saturday against Bowling Green and for the foreseeable future.
"Sean is dealing with some injury, he has a groin injury," Meyer said. "He missed most of camp."
Nuernberger won nearly a season-long kicking competition with graduate transfer Jack Willoughby ahead of Ohio State's lone loss of the 2015 season against Michigan State in mid-November. He made 3-of-4 field goal attempts and all 17 of his extra point tries last year.
Nuernberger has not missed a point after try in his career, making all 89 kicks in Ohio State's 2014 national title season. He finished 13-of-20 on field goal tries that season.
Durbin saw his black stripe removed earlier this week after kicking a 62-yarder in practice.
"That's his name, right? Tyler Durbin?" asked Meyer.
