COLUMBUS – The Ohio State football team passed the halfway point of fall camp on Monday morning, as Urban Meyer and his Buckeyes held their 15th practice of the preseason.
Following Monday's practice, Meyer held his weekly press conference at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center to answer the biggest questions that remain about the Buckeyes after two weeks of fall camp.
Here's what you need to know from Monday's meeting with Meyer:
- Tate Martell has done "some really nice things" but is still getting a true grasp of the offense. Martell is "a very confident guy" but Meyer says he loves where he's at right now.
- The true backup quarterback competition is between Joe Burrow and Dwayne Haskins, not Martell.
- Malcolm Pridgeon, Branden Bowen, Matt Burrell and Demetrius Knox are all still competing to start at right guard. No update on who is taking more first-team reps than others.
- Meyer is "very pleased with where we're at offensively" with the adaptations Kevin Wilson has made.
- On the quarterbacks: "That unit's playing very strong right now."
- "You can't put a price on" the amount of experienced leaders the Buckeyes have right now from their fifth-year seniors.
- No update on how long Michael Hill will be suspended.
- Asked how he continues to recruit top quarterbacks when they know they will have to compete for playing time, Meyer invoked the example of Cardale Jones taking advantage of his opportunity as a third-string quarterback.
- More freshmen will lose their black stripe tonight, but Meyer did not specify who those freshmen will be.
Stay tuned with Eleven Warriors for further updates this afternoon, as quarterbacks coach Ryan Day and quarterbacks J.T. Barrett, Joe Burrow and Dwayne Haskins are scheduled to speak with the media after Meyer's press conference.
