J.T. Barrett's trip to New Orleans won't be just a minicamp tryout after all.
One day after it was reported that Barrett would participate in the New Orleans Saints' rookie minicamp next weekend, the former Ohio State quarterback signed a three-year contract with the team, as first reported by NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport and confirmed by Eleven Warriors.
Barrett's deal with the Saints is worth a total of $1.71 million over three years. That's a standard contract for an undrafted rookie, however, and while it does mean that Barrett is now officially on the Saints' 90-man preseason roster, it does not guarantee that he will make the team's 53-man regular season roster.
In the hours following the final rounds of the draft on Saturday, Barrett accepted an invitation to participate in the Indianapolis Colts' rookie minicamp. He did not sign a contract with the Colts, however, leaving him free to strike a deal with the Saints instead.
Barrett now joins a roster in New Orleans that already included five former Buckeyes, including three former teammates of Barrett's – Michael Thomas, Marshon Lattimore and Vonn Bell – as well as Ted Ginn and Kurt Coleman.
New Orleans currently only has three other quarterbacks on its roster – Drew Brees, Tom Savage and Taysom Hill – leaving the door open for Barrett to potentially beat out Savage or Hill for a backup quarterback job.
