Ohio State's game with Michigan set for Saturday fell through due to a COVID-19 outbreak inside of the Wolverines' program, and Texas A&M's tilt with Ole Miss scheduled to kick off this weekend was postponed because of positive coronavirus cases on the Rebels' team.
So, would the two College Football Playoff hopefuls consider setting up a short-notice game to take place this weekend? Based on comments Wednesday morning from Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher, it would be unwise for anybody to get their hopes up.
On a SiriusXM appearance with hosts Jacob Hester and Chris Doering, he addressed the possibility of No. 5 Texas A&M setting up a short-notice game with the No. 4 Buckeyes, calling it “a little bit crazy” and “a very tough thing to do on a game that means so much.”
Fisher's full comments:
“You'd be considering it. But I think on Wednesday, I mean, I think you're being a little bit crazy with it because you know that from game preparation and to get the quality of game you want to do, I don't think you would... Because if you want to go into that game for both of us, there's a lot on the line. You would want to be prepared for the game. Now, to play them? Yeah, it doesn't bother me to play them. I'd love to play them. Play them in the playoff. Line up and play them. Whatever it is. I think on a Wednesday, I think would be a very tough thing to do on a game that means so much.”
Would @AggieFootball head coach Jimbo Fisher be willing to play #OhioState this weekend? Not so fast, Twitter. He joined @JacobHester18 and @ChrisDoering on #SECThisMorning pic.twitter.com/xChNIGXrSk

As of now, Big Ten rules preventing schools from scheduling football games with non-conference opponents wouldn't even allow the game to take place. Nebraska attempted to get a game with Chattanooga earlier this season when a COVID-19-spurred cancelation of its game against Wisconsin left it without an opponent, but the conference stepped in to prevent it from happening.
Yet even if the Big Ten decided to relent and allow Ohio State to look for somebody to play this weekend outside of the conference, Fisher appears to have no interest in turning a regular season Buckeyes-Aggies showdown on Saturday into a reality.
