Ohio State tight end Zak Herbstreit was hospitalized at the Wexner Medical Center on Tuesday.
According to a report from Clay Hall of ABC6 in Columbus, Herbstreit was admitted into Ohio State's hospital with an undisclosed health issue. Wexner Medical Center staff later confirmed with Hall that Herbstreit is in stable condition and that various staff members will monitor and evaluate him for the duration of his stay.
Herbstreit, the son of former Ohio State captain Kirk Herbstreit and grandson of former captain Jim Herbstreit, will enter his third year with the Buckeyes in 2023. The 6-foot-2, 243-pound tight end arrived in Columbus as a preferred walk-on in the class of 2021 and shed his black stripe in fall camp last season.
"His family is with him and appreciates everyone's concerns and prayers," Kirk Herbstreit told ABC6 via a text message Tuesday morning. A few hours later, he also sent out a personal statement and one from Zak on Twitter.
My son Zak is in the hospital and wanted me to send this note out. I just wanted to add how much we appreciate so many people reaching out concerned about his well being. He has a long journey ahead of him.

“I have had a bit of a setback these past couple of weeks. Not feeling right. Culminated with test results this past Friday that forced me into the hospital," Zak said. "I have some of the best cardiologists looking after me, and I am beyond appreciative. We are doing a number of tests and conjuring a plan to ensure that I will be able to be back to feeling normal again. I appreciate the overwhelming support over the past couple of days. I am feeling good and hope to be out of the hospital soon.”
The Ohio State football Twitter account quickly reposted the message, reminding the Herbstreits that the football program and its fans will stand with the family in Zak's search for answers regarding his recent health complications.
