A 40-year Ohio State record has been broken.

With an 18-yard catch against Penn State, Jeremiah Smith surpassed Cris Carter for the most single-season receiving yards ever from an Ohio State freshman. Carter's record of 648 yards had stood in the Ohio State record book since 1984. Smith exceeded that total in his eighth appearance for the Buckeyes.

Smith's accomplishment is the latest of several rare feats for the 6-foot-3, 215-pound wide receiver. After he arrived on campus in January as the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2024 class, Smith earned the earliest black stripe removal in that tradition's 13-year history this past spring. He also became the first freshman that strength coach Mick Marotti and his staff have named an Iron Buckeye for their performance in the weight room during the offseason.

Entering the Penn State game, Smith had been Ohio State's leader in receiving yards (623) and receiving touchdowns (eight). He also ranked second in receptions behind Emeka Egbuka (43) with 35.
