Jeremiah Smith has emerged as one of the best freshmen in college football while playing wide receiver for Ohio State, and the national awards scene recognizes as much.
On Wednesday, the Maxwell Football Club named Smith a semifinalist for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year award, given annually to the best freshman in college football.

Smith has already broken the Buckeyes' school record for receiving yards in a season by a freshman, racking up 678 yards and eight touchdowns in eight games, also tying the freshman school record for scores. He's three receptions away from breaking that Ohio State freshman record as well, with 39 on the year.
Playing his high school football for Chaminade-Madonna Prep in Opa Locka, Florida, Smith was the No. 1 prospect in the 247Sports composite for the recruiting class of 2024. He had the earliest-ever black stripe removal by an Ohio State freshman and was the first-ever freshman named an Iron Buckeye by the team's strength and conditioning staff, and he’s backed up those accolades with his stellar play in Ohio State’s first eight games.
