Barrett worked with Johnson for three years with the Detroit Lions, starting as an offensive assistant in 2022. He was promoted to assistant quarterbacks coach in 2023 and remained in that role in 2024.
The former Ohio State standout will be tasked with the development of Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft last spring.
Barrett got into coaching in 2022 after a brief stint with the CFL’s Edmonton Elks. He spent two years in the NFL with three teams, having brief tenures with the New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers, though he never played in an NFL regular-season game.
In college, Barrett was a three-time first-team All-Big Ten selection, a three-team Big Ten Quarterback of the Year, the Big Ten's Most Valuable Player in 2016 and was part of the Buckeyes' national championship team in 2014. He remains Ohio State’s all-time leader in passing yards and the Big Ten’s all-time leader in passing and total touchdowns.
