The big news over the weekend was 24/7's Steve Wiltfong's report on 2014 four-star offensive line recruit Jamarco Jones' planning to take an official visit to Michigan State.
Jones chose the Buckeyes over the Spartans in June when he originally committed. As Jordan noted, it was Mike Vrabel's relationship with Mama Jones that sealed the deal in the Buckeyes favor. Obviously, that situation has changed.
Last week, it was reported Demetrius Knox scheduled visits to UCLA and Texas, but a home visit from Urban Meyer, Tom Herman and Ed Warinner pretty much put an end to that.
Urban and company have already held their in-home visit with Jones, so Urban will have to dig deep in his bag of tricks in order to keep a key recruit in the 2014 class.
BRAXTON MIXES WITH THE SMALLFOLK. Braxton took to his Twitter yesterday for a simple Q&A with the people. Among his answers:
- He runs a 4.36 40-yard dash.
- His max bench press is 395(!).
- He's most excited to throw to Michael Thomas next year, but DeVier Posey is his favorite all-time receiver.
- His favorite rapper is Young Jeezy.
- He's confident he can make some random high schooler miss in the open field.
- Don't ask about why Kenny Guiton didn't play against Clemson unless you want clowned.
And yes, I'm feeling even better about my prediction of Mike Thomas being next year's break-out star. You heard it here first, folks. Must credit me and my ego.
MALIK HOOKER, STILL ATHLETIC. Last week, I brought you news about 2014 commit Malik Hooker's athleticism with an anecdote about him dropping 36 points in a high school basketball game while his future college coach watched. Today, I bring you a visual. There's a reason this kid is listed as an athlete:
JAMEIS: FAVORITE TO MATCH ARCHIE. Jameis Winston ran roughshod over his competition en route to the 2013 Heisman Trophy. In ominous news for Ohio State fans and protectors of Archie Griffin's legacy, Winston has been listed as favorite in next year's Heisman race, per Bovada:
- Jameis Winston: 2/1
- Marcus Mariota: 7/2
- Braxton Miller: 4/1
- TJ Yeldon: 5/1
- Bryce Petty, 5/1
Obviously, a lot of football to be played between now and the 2014 Heisman ceremony, but damn, nobody will ever deserve to match Archie. (AND NAH, I'M NOT BIASED.) Save us, Braxton!
REMEMBER LANE KIFFIN OFFERED THAT SEVENTH GRADER? Let's rehash the hilarity of this:
As a seventh grader in February 2010, Sills verbally committed to USC, less than a month after Lane Kiffin took over as the Trojans' head coach. Steve Clarkson, a noted private quarterbacks coach from Southern California who started working with Sills when he was 10, had asked Kiffin to watch a highlights video of Sills that Clarkson uploaded to YouTube a day earlier. After viewing the film, Kiffin told Clarkson that Sills was talented but skinny. He then inquired about Sills' age.
"He's 13," Clarkson replied.
Thirty minutes later, Kiffin called back Clarkson.
"He said, 'What would you think if I offered him a scholarship?'," Clarkson said. "I said, 'Well, I know you're going to offer him at some point.' He goes, 'No, like right now. Today.' I was like, 'Are you crazy?'"
Fast forward to 2014, and David Sills is a 3-star recruit headed to USC after he graduates next year.
Of course Lane Kiffin is now at Alabama, which over the weekend lost the commitment of the No. 1 QB in the 2015 class, Ricky Town. Where is Ricky Town now committed? To USC of course.
(Alabama, never one to take an L too hard on the recruiting trail, secured the services of Jameis Winston's rocket-armed backup over the weekend. It's expected he'll replace paladin AJ McCarron.)
