Baker Mayfield, a former walk-on at Texas Tech and Oklahoma, the latter at which he now stars at QB, plays angry. Despite his three-star rating in 2013, no school Mayfield rated rated him with a scholarship.
Which school's lack of offer bummed him out the most? Let Mayfield tell it as only he can.
From cbssports.com:
“TCU,” he replied without hesitation. “They told me they were gonna offer me a scholarship and kind of drug it out, and I told other schools I wasn't interested because I thought I was going to go there, and I truly believed they were going to offer me because they told me that. They disappointed me and kind of hung me out to dry right before signing day.”
Mayfield added this about Patterson: “He doesn't like me, and I have no comment about that.”
Mayfield tried the "no comment" disabler after dropping a meaty comment. Bold play, and it probably would've worked on most coaches.
Gary Patterson, however, doesn't mince words, and he wasn't about to let the comments of a 20-year-old slide off his back so easily. Not even Papa Mayfield was spared Patterson's after-practice wrath:
From campusinsiders.com:
"If Baker Mayfield wants to blame TCU for 128 BCS schools not offering him a scholarship, that's fine. But ask Kliff Kingsbury why he didn't offer him a scholarship at Texas Tech. Ask about Baker's dad [James]. He's an arrogant guy who thinks he knows everything. If people knew the whole story, they might not have a great opinion of Baker or his father."
Chad Glasgow, Texas Christian's defensive coordinator that recruited the quarterback, confirmed they told Mayfield "the first week of January [2013]" the Frogs wouldn't be offering him a scholarship.
Patterson clarified:
"Remember what was going on then. Casey Pachall was in alcohol rehab, we already had Trevone [Boykin], Tyler Matthews was an early commit. When we knew we were getting Casey back, there just wasn't a need. This stuff happens all the time."
Don't bring ruckus to Patterson's doorstep unless you're about that action. Mayfield, who undoubtedly still fancies himself a gunslinger about that action, is due to speak to assembled playoff media later Tuesday morning.
Texas Christian's next game against Oklahoma is on Oct. 1, 2016.
