Ohio State checks in at No. 2 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of 2024.
By now, everyone knows what a dumpster fire the head coaching search was like at Tennessee following the firing of Butch Jones.
Or do they?
On Friday, the Times Free Press reported that now-former Tennessee athletic director John Currie was getting texts from everyone and their mother concerning the head coaching search, including texts from former quarterback Joshua Dobbs, who inquired about the rumors suggesting Jon Gruden would be the next head coach.
The best texts, at least by our estimation, that Currie got were from former Michigan man and then-interim head coach Brady Hoke, who wanted Currie to know that he was still interested in the job after Currie repeatedly struck out with candidates, including Ohio State assistant Greg Schiano.
From the Times Free Press:
Currie's search for Jones' replacement got so dire that even interim head coach Brady Hoke sent a text to Currie on Nov. 29 making sure Currie knew Hoke would be interested in the full-time job.
"JOHN I HOPE YOU DO KNOW I WOULD LIKE TO BE YOUR HEAD FOOTBALL COACH I DO KNOW THE ENVIRONMENT WE LIVE IN AND WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE AT TENNESSEE!" Hoke wrote, using all capital letters.
...
"JOHN VERY SORRY TO HEAR WHAT HAS HAPPENED THIS IS THE BULL CRAP THAT COLLEGE FOOTBALL HAS BECOME. IF I CAN BE OF ANY HELP PLEASE LET ME KNOW." Hoke wrote to Currie after Currie was relieved of his duties.
Currie was placed on administrative leave before former football coach Philip Fulmer took the reigns and hired Alabama assistant Jeremy Pruitt on Dec. 6.
Hoke, who apparently needs a new phone where 'caps lock' isn't always on, is now an assistant for the Carolina Panthers, and visited Ohio State's Pro Day on Thursday.
