The Heisman Trust’s decision comes amid what it calls "enormous changes” in college football, citing the introduction of name, image and likeness rights in collegiate athletics over the past three years.
"We are thrilled to welcome Reggie Bush back to the Heisman family in recognition of his collegiate accomplishments," Michael Comerford, president of The Heisman Trophy Trust, told Thamel in a statement. "We considered the enormous changes in college athletics over the last several years in deciding that now is the right time to reinstate the trophy for Reggie. We are so happy to welcome him back."
According to Thamel, Bush will receive his original Heisman Trophy, and USC will receive a replica. The Heisman Trust will also welcome Bush back to the Heisman Trophy ceremony and other Heisman events starting in 2024.

"I also look forward to working together with the Heisman Trust to advance the values and mission of the organization."
