Today in 1963 the Rolling Stones added their most consistent and reliable member in drummer Charlie Watts. Watts was already a fairly established musician as he came to the Stones directly from Alexis Korner's incredibly influential Blues Incorporated band.
It was through his work with Blues Incorporated that Watts came to know Mick, Keef and Brian Jones, as they often attended Blues Inc. shows.
Watts' first love was jazz but he came around to R&B, blues and rock over time. This versatility helped the Stones in two major ways. Watts exposed the fledgling band to a wide variety of music and, as the band grew in musical range he was able to shepherd them along the way.
Watts was never a flashy player but he was absolutely intrinsic to the Stones' sound throughout their many changing eras. He also provided a bit of tranquility in a tempest of egos, personalities and chemicals.
