Shoutout to the Teachers in My District

Today, I witnessed perhaps the greatest decision making from a group of teachers ever. Earlier this morning, a deranged father showed up at our school to try and pick up his children, in which he does not have custody of. The main door is always locked and can be opened/closed remotely. However, our school is a very old one, with several doors that may or may not be always securely locked. In addition, there are several windows on the ground floor that are easily accessible. We also live in a very low crime area. Our security measures aren't nearly what you would see in bigger cities.

In fear that this visibly and audibly deranged man may find another path into the school, the teachers came up with a plan. Once you enter the main door of the school, you enter the staircase. On each floor, there are sets of double doors sealing the staircase from the hallways where the classrooms are located.

Their plan: Quickly lock all the doors on the interior, and then allow the man to enter through the main door. Once in, lock the main door behind him (remote activated). Plan was executed, and the man was now trapped in the stairwell. Sheriff arrived 10 minutes later and an arrest was made.

This was such great thinking. My dad always told me, if a thief wants to enter bad enough, he will enter. Locks are only there to stop the lazy thieves. Commendable job to realize in the heat of the moment that had the man been denied access, he could've easily broken in through any of those ground floor windows, or found a less secure door, and had access to the entire school. Instead, they got him to do exactly what they wanted, and not only stopped a potential incident, but also allowed for an easy arrest.

Job well done.
