If you’re concerned that unlimited transfers will lead to full-blown free agency in college sports, you may be able to set those concerns aside for now.
According to a report by The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach, it is now “increasingly unlikely” that the NCAA’s Division I Board of Directors will vote to eliminate the rule prohibiting athletes from transferring multiple times without sitting out a year. While the NCAA’s Division I Council endorsed a recommendation to eliminate that rule earlier this month, many university presidents and coaches have expressed concerns about that recommendation, per Auerbach.
Because of that, the proposal to implement transfer windows could also be tabled. If the current rules stay in place, athletes would be allowed to enter the transfer portal at any time and be eligible to play immediately without sitting out a year if they have not transferred previously and if they enter the portal before the cutoff deadline for their respective sports (May 1 for fall sports, July 1 for winter/spring sports).
