After a delay earlier this summer, the NCAA officially approved the implementation of transfer windows on Wednesday.
For college football players and other Division I fall sports athletes, there will be two windows of time in which they can enter the transfer portal and be eligible to play immediately: 45 days after the day championship selections are made in their sport – which means 45 days in December-January starting the day after playoff and bowl selections are made in college football – and from May 1-15.
According to Wednesday’s release by the NCAA, “reasonable accommodations will be made for participants in the Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision championship games.” This year’s College Football Playoff championship game is scheduled for January 9, which would leave just nine days for participants in that game to enter the portal during the transfer window.
Winter sports athletes will have one 60-day transfer window following championship selections in their sports. Spring sports athletes will have a 15-day window from December 1-15 and a 45-day window after championship selections are made in their sport.
There will be exceptions to the new transfer windows for student-athletes who experience head coach changes or have athletics aid reduced, canceled or not renewed.
Athletes will still only be eligible to play immediately after their first transfer unless they receive a waiver from the NCAA. The Division I Board of Directors opted not to pass a proposal that would have allowed athletes to transfer multiple times and be immediately eligible without receiving a waiver. Per Wednesday’s release, the board “adopted new, more specific standards for immediate eligibility waivers for student-athletes who do not otherwise meet the one-time transfer exception, focusing on student-athlete well-being or circumstances outside the student-athlete's control.”
