First, I think the B1G needs to expand two more teams... and I'd happily grab some ACC teams that would increase our footprint. I'd like to get Notre Dame, obviously. But North Carolina, Miami, And Georgia Tech intrigue me as options. (Stanford intrigues me, too).
I'm looking at the Big 12...which will be 16 teams in 2024:
Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, BYU, UCF, Cincinnati, Colorado, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech, Utah and West Virginia.
The PROBLEM with the Big 12 is that there is NO football blue-blood anymore (it is still an excellent BBALL league). It needs a FOOTBALL name that moves the needle on TV. Stanford and Cal are definitely NOT that!
The PAC 12 is done. The ACC will likely be done. The Big and SEC will contend for championships in FOOTBALL. NOW...the Big 12 is a BBALL league that plays football, too.
Also, I think travel distance does matter. Since the ACC is also a BBall league... maybe they could get some big Football names and good Bball schools?
I could see them grabbing Pitt & Louisville (close to WVU & Cincy)... both good BBALL schools and then get Clemson and FSU...very recognizable, good FOOTBALL schools.
BONUS: keeps those schools away from the SEC. The SEC needs 4 teams to get to 20. This would probably force them to choose the other ACC leftovers like VA Tech, Virginia, and whoever else is left. The B1G and Big 12 need to make sure that they keep more football power away from the SEC.
