Some Thoughts Before THE Game

I can’t wait for 1100 tomorrow (I’m in Austin TX now) and I’m just watching all the sports talk I can tolerate.  Finebaum on SEC network and  Josh Pate on YouTube among a few others have had some interesting comments.  Everyone has a feature on THE game naturally that interests me but it was an offhand quote of an SEC coach by Chris Doering on the Finebaum show that got me thinking about something.

Doering was previewing two games where 5-6 teams (SC and Fla) were playing rivals with much better records and that he felt had legitimate shots to win.  He commented how important it was to the coach to get that 6th win and bowl eligibility so that he could have 15 more practices with his team. He quoted the coach as saying “I’d do a lot of unspeakable things to get a chance at 15 more days with my young guys who are returning”

That got me thinking that in addition to addressing sign stealing by enabling radio communication like the NFL the playing field needs to be leveled by letting every team have some December practices. Instead of 15 give the non bowl eligible teams 10 but why take additional practices away from teams who need it the most?  That seems like a no brained in the service of trying to increase parity to a degree.  Some teams are already getting most of the top recruits, which is the largest factor in the competitive disparities we see, but they also get 15 more days to work with those players since they are always bowl eligible.  Something about that doesn’t seem right.

Many will refer to how the NFL does ithings as a way to encourage the college game to evolve (expanded playoffs for one) but there is no way the NFL would allow its best 16 teams to have more practices with their players than the others.

What y’all think?
