Lacrosse fans, if you haven't seen the latest US Lacrosse Magazine, Corey McLaughlin wrote an outstanding feature piece on Buckeye attackman, Eric Fannell. It's titled, "More Than Meets the Buckeye."
Fannell's path to D1 lacrosse is anything but ordinary, and the adversity (hasn't seen or spoken to his father in seven years, battled with addiction since age 14, suffered a bad knee injury playing DIII lax) this young man has faced is tremendous. But the way he plays lacrosse, and his absolute love of the game and his teammates is inspiring.
"He's limping around, almost dragging his leg. I'm thinking, 'That's the guy I flew up here for?' But he set like 50 picks on one leg." — Ohio State coach Nick Myers
Fannell is an amazing scorer, which is incredible for a guy who started as a goalie playing box lacrosse. But he's also one of the least selfish players you'll see on a lacrosse field. He's number 20 in this video and is the player starting with the ball.
In his first year with the Buckeyes last spring, the 6-foot-1, 220-pound Fannell heated up in the season’s second half. In 15 games, he finished with 24 points, third on the team, creating higher expectations this season. (This fall, he scored five goals with an assist in a scrimmage against North Carolina.) He posted a GPA north of 3.0, too.
“He’s the best player nobody knows about,” one rival coach said this offseason.
This is an old highlight video (2011), but it gives a great look into Fannell's athletic ability. He's #5 at the beginning and #23 later in.
