At the PC, Smith said that he reached agreement with Holtmann the morning of Thursday, June 8, and had an athletic dept. staffer call all the other candidates and tell them that Holtmann had the job.  McDermott announced at noon he turned the job down.  

That timing tells me McDermott was not offered the job, but was the backup to Holtmann.  Am I wrong?
