I totally understand that teenagers are prone to changing their minds at the last minute, and given the lack of loyalty on the part of the schools and coaches, we can't hold it against them, but it seems to me like these aren't entirely victimless decisions.
What about the next player down the recruiting board who loses his chance to play at a major program or get a much better opportunity because another guy held onto his spot until the day before signing day?
When Bijan and Jaylan Knighton essentially bowed out of the class a few months back, it opened up an opportunity for Miyan Williams to come to Ohio State. But when someone like Phillips bows out at the very last minute, the Miyan Williams in that scenario is probably past the point of making a last-minute change himself. Even though he might've preferred to go to Ohio State (and it might've provided him a much better shot at making the NFL), another guy held onto his scholarship until it was essentially too late for him to take it.
Imagine the scenario where Bijan Robinson had been committed to Ohio State until yesterday, then he decommited at the last minute. Miyan Williams ends up at Iowa State, when he could've had the much bigger opportunity at Ohio State. Bijan's indecision and last-minute change literally cost another guy his shot. Doesn't seem totally right when you look at it that way.
