Last night, the United States Men's National Team triumphed 1-0 over their bitter rivals, Mexico, in a "friendly" match played in Nashville, TN. While New York Red Bulls midfielder Tyler Adams got the winning goal, the moment of the match came when defender Matt Miazga, who plays his club football for Nantes in France (on loan from Chelsea), got into some delightful extracurriculars with Mexican winger Diego Lainez.
Miazga was already on a yellow card when in the second half Diego Lainez (who had been running amok all night long, making dangerous runs against the American defense) fouled and then attempted to provoke Miazga into a violent reaction that would have ended with him getting a second yellow and thus expelled from the match. Instead, Miazga kept his cool and reminded Lainez, who is about a foot shorter than him and is listed at 128 lbs, that's it a very bad idea to start shit with someone who can bench press you. Mexico's players came to Lainez's defense, and the situation almost spiralled out of control. While the officials were able to tamp it down, the incident got into Mexico's collective heads, and a few minutes later a defender committed a red-card foul, which led to Mexico playing down a man and losing 1-0.
Here's the video:
I don't know what Matt told Lainez exactly, but I imagine it included the words "Little boy."
