women's volleyball takes down no. 1 nebraska

The Ohio State women’s volleyball team defeated the No. 1 team in the country, Nebraska, in four sets in Lincoln on Sunday. With this win, the then No. 19 Buckeyes are responsible for breaking the Huskers 28 match winning streak. This was also the first win over a No. 1 ranked team on the road for women’s volleyball in school history. Ohio State improved its overall record to 12-4 for the season and 2-2 in the Big Ten. After the impressive victory, the Buckeyes moved up to No. 14 and Nebraska got knocked down to No. 3.

This was the first time Nebraska has lost three straight sets since the NCAA semifinals in 2014. Ohio State outscored Nebraska by 20 points combined in the last three sets, thanks to Luisa Schirmer and Taylor Sanbothe. The pair lead the Buckeyes, each with 19.5 points. In addition to leading the team in scoring, Schirmer had 14 kills, 12 digs, and two service aces to give her a double double. Sandbothe had 12 kills of her own, nine blocks, and two aces. Taylor Hughes, whom head coach Geoff Carlston called the “most underrated setter in the country” after the game, had 11 kills for the day.

Nebraska joined the Big Ten in 2011 and since then holds a winning record against every school in the conference, except for Ohio State. The two powerhouse volleyball programs are tied at 4-4, but the Bucks are 4-3 in all-time program history at Lincoln.
