Buckeye excellence is not exclusive to the football field or the basketball court. Around the Oval is our way of keeping you informed of the amazing things happening with the other 34 varsity sports on campus.

Softball Wins Series In Maryland

Ohio State traveled to Maryland this weekend, winning two of three bouts. The results pushed the Bucks to a 20-10 record, including a 5-1 record in the Big Ten.

The Terrapins took the first game of the series, besting the Buckeyes 2-3. Ohio State's pitcher Morgan Ray allowed just three hits and two earned runs. It was tied 2-2 heading into the final inning when Maryland recorded an error, giving the Bucks a chance. No runs came of it and an Ohio State miscue on the other was the difference, giving the Terps the decisive run.

The Buckeyes came to play on Saturday, however, run-ruling the Terrapins 10-1 in five innings. Pitcher Lauren Rice allowed two hits and no earned runs. After a poor offensive performance the day before, the Bucks caught fire, scoring five runs in the second inning, including two home runs. Ohio State kept extending its advantage the rest of the way, winning it in the fifth off of an RBI single.

Saturday's performance was impressive, but Sunday's was even better. Ohio State recorded a season-high 17 hits, which resulted in 15 runs. The Terps managed to hit home just three times in seven innings. The Bucks went up 6-1 after a big third inning and held the advantage the rest of the way, putting some icing on the cake with a five-run seventh inning to go up 15-3.

The softball team will take on the Pittsburgh Panthers on Wednesday.

Track and Field Teams Compete in Gainesville, Raleigh

The track and field teams split up this weekend, with the majority of the athletes going to Gainesville, Florida for the Pepsi Florida Relay while a number of distance runners competed at the Raleigh Relays. Ohio State earned twelve new personal records, earned four medals, broke three school records this weekend.

On Friday night in Friday, Luke Landis set a new personal record in the 5000m with a time of 14:10.56, which was good for a bronze medal. On Saturday, Anavia Battle beat her previous record in the 200m dash (11.37s) and broke the Ohio State record in the 200m dash (22.54s). Kate Deaton competed in the hammer throw for the college event, taking home a silver medal (58.85m). Sade Olatoye, the Big Ten Athlete of the Year, earned a bronze medal (62.70m) in the hammer throw invite. In Raleigh, Christine Frederick broke the school record for the women’s 10,000m, finishing with a time of 33:46.57,

In the relays, the women's sprint medley team came in third with a time of 3:49.12s. The women's 4x800 team of Aziza Ayoub, Annie Ubbing, Courtney Clody, and Julia Rizk broke the school record, recording a time of 8:30.79.

The track and field teams will be back in action on Friday for the All-Ohio Championships.

Men's Lacrosse Loses Big Ten Opener

The Buckeyes dropped their first match of the season yesterday, losing to Rutgers 6-14. Ohio State hosted over 70 former lacrosse players before the match.

The Bucks scored the first goal of the game but quickly lost control, allowing the Scarlet Knights to score six unanswered goals. The Buckeyes were able to generate 45 shots, nine more than Rutgers, but could not find the back of the net. Rutgers had nearly twice as many saves as Ohio State. Junior Tre Leclaire scored twice yesterday, extending his goal-scoring streak to 15 games.

The Buckeyes will be back in action next Sunday in State College.
