The Buckeyes came out of the gate a bit sluggish at Illinois, but went in to halftime at with a five point lead and seemingly all the momentum. After extending that lead to 13 midway with just over six minutes to play, it appeared Ohio State was going to runaway from the Fighting Illini in Champaign, a rare feat for any Scarlet and Gray cagers.
Unfortunately for the Thad Matta and his band of rambunctious basketballers, the coast-to-victory plans were scrapped thanks to a icy-cold shooting spell and a flurry of three-point buckets by John Groce's Illinois team and we saw overtime in Illinois. Despite the lackluster finish, the Buckeyes managed to hold off the Illini 68-63 in overtime after an up-and-down outing.
The win improved Ohio State to 14-8 overall and 6-3 at the midway point of the Big Ten schedule. They'll be back in action on Sunday when they face Maryland in Columbus.
