When Trevon Grimes announces where he intends to play college football, he will likely don just as big if not a larger smile than the one he dialed up when asked Friday if he is counting down to his Aug. 24 commitment date.
"Definitely," the 2017 five-star wide receiver said following Friday Night Lights. "It's really anticipated and I'm more excited as the days go down. I'm really looking forward to it."
The Buckeyes offered Grimes last July and if he commits anywhere but to Urban Meyer and Ohio State in 32 days, it will be a major shock.
"They're my leader. They've been my leader since I was a freshman," Grimes said. "Just gotta get out here and experience it, talk with Coach Urban, Coach (Zach) Smith. I really feel loved here and I like it a lot."
Both Smith and true freshman wide receiver Austin Mack messed with Grimes as he spoke with reporters after Friday Night Lights, hoping for a slip up. He didn't participate in the camp, but really didn't need to.
“It would take a lot for another school to jump past that, but as of now, Ohio State is my leader and I'm sticking with that.”– Trevon Grimes
Grimes came for the atmosphere and to continue growing close to what appear to be his future teammates both either in the 2017 class or current Ohio State players.
"Definitely loved the camp, love the coaches, love the players, love everything," Grimes said. "Just gotta make a couple bonds with recruits and talk them up with it. I love everything about Ohio State right now."
The 6-foot-3, 202-pound five-star prospect hails from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and attends St. Thomas Aquinas High School, the powerhouse program that produced Joey and Nick Bosa.
Grimes said he planned to go visit with the younger Bosa following interview sessions with reporters, another big reason he made the trip north from Florida for Friday Night Lights. He spent time with Meyer, Mack, Dwayne Haskins, Binjimen Victor and many other Buckeyes while on the Ohio Stadium turf, joking around and enjoying himself.
It looked like Aug. 24 will be just a formality, though Grimes is pleased his recruitment will end before his final year of high school gets under way.
"It's a relief," Grimes said. "Just going into my senior season knowing that I don't have to worry about recruitment anymore."
Grimes said he feels close with Meyer because the head coach treats him like his own son, a relationship built over the last year-plus. The Buckeyes currently don't have a wide receiver commit in an already loaded 2017 class, but Grimes is doing his best to make sure he covers all his bases before taking the dive into scarlet and gray.
"I feel like one thing I have to do before I commit is visit every school," Grimes said. "I visited four of them already and looking to visit the other two before Aug. 24."
Every recruitment is different and you can't blame the star wideout for taking trips just to be sure he makes the right choice. But his smile said it all: Grimes is all Buckeye.
"One thing that I'm big on is feeling like I'm at home," Grimes said. "At Ohio State, I feel like I'm at home. It would take a lot for another school to jump past that, but as of now, Ohio State is my leader and I'm sticking with that."
