Eleven Warriors was first to tell Ohio State fans that the Buckeyes would wear uniforms honoring the 1916 team for a Military Appreciation game against Nebraska. We were also the first to give fans a look at the retail version of the jerseys the team will wear Saturday.
Today, we're proud to be first when it comes to letting you know how you can score one of these jerseys paying tribute to Chic Harley and the '16 Buckeyes.
Fanatics, Nike.com and local retailers will have the striped jerseys honoring the 1916 team on sale Tuesday morning. Here's how you can get your hands on one.
Nike is rolling out the following for Saturday's alternate uniforms:
- Men's limited edition 1916 tribute jersey: $149.99
- Youth 1916 tribute replica jersey: $59.99
- Kids 1916 tribute replica jersey: $54.99
- Nike 1916 tribute long sleeve shirt: $39.99
- Nike 1916 tribute short sleeve shirt: $25.99
- Nike 1916 tribute women's tee: $25.99
The jersey comes in No. 16, which reflects the current year and in no way, shape or form represents the number of Ohio State's starting quarterback, per the school's retail uniform number designation policy.
The t-shirts, available in short and long sleeve options, feature a tag with “Music and Cannon Fire” on it. The phrase, of course, is from Columbus native and Ohio State grad James Thurber's famous description of Ohio State legend Chic Harley, who led the Buckeyes to a 7–0 record and the program's first Big Ten championship in 1916.
“If you never saw him run with a football, I can't describe it to you. It wasn't like Red Grange or Tom Harmon or anybody else. It was kind of a cross between music and cannon fire, and it brought your heart up under your ears,” Thurber wrote for the New York City newspaper, PM, in 1941.
If previous alternate jersey sales are any indication, you can expect these to go quickly, so you'll want to move on these.
