Things are well underway at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
Ohio State broke camp on Wednesday, has gotten after it the past few days and just went through its last non-padded practice of the preseason on Monday morning. Afterward, head coach Ryan Day met with the media to give his thoughts on the happenings of camp.
He hit on the quarterbacks (of course), the defense (of course) and more, such as the starting offensive line and more.
A bullet-point rundown of what Day said (with video coming soon):
Ryan Day
- "It was great to watch some of the Pro Football Hall of Fame inductions last night."
- Day said he was saddened by Bobby Bowden's death this weekend. "The impact and what so many people say about him is what it's really all about."
- On the starting offensive line: "We're trying to find the best five on the field at once." He says it'll be beneficial to guys like Paris Johnson and Dawand Jones to have the ability to play both guard and tackle. "Especially at this time of year, we try to mix and match."
- They'll expect to know the starting offensive line by the end of this week or early next week, he says.
- On if he's concerned about NIL impacting the team with distractions: "I'm not." He says some of them have taken advantage of it to make some money, and he thinks the players have done a good job with their prioritization of football and school.
- On Miyan Williams going through running back drills first: "I wouldn't look too much into all that in terms of where guys align." He says all five tailbacks are getting reps right now. After these next two weeks, he expects the depth chart to be able to get set. "Depth chart isn't really important. It will be soon. But right now, it's about getting reps."
- On the feedback he's gotten from the defensive coaches about J.T. Tuimoloau: "Tremendous attention to detail, very conscientious, takes a lot of notes, can take a meeting to the field." He says he has made up a lot in a short amount of time. "When you see him move, he looks more like a 250-pound player" even though he's 275 pounds. "A long way to go, but the talent is certainly there."
- "These are those days that nobody sees when you're training." He says the team will be in the hotel together for the next two weeks.
- Day says he's been "very, very impressed" with Thayer Munford's leadership. He also notes that Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson have taken a lot of reps and worked on timing with the quarterbacks. "Their attitude has been excellent. I think that's going to go a long, long way." He specifically mentions Teradja Mitchell and Zach Harrison as impressive leaders.
- On the quarterback decision and whether it's coming soon: "After this week, we're going to have a really good feel." He says they'll have a good idea by Sunday.
- On Dawand Jones: "He's grown a lot in three years. I think he was a basketball player trying to figure out how to play football. I kind of laugh sometimes and say he's the largest skill player of all-time." He says several offensive linemen have told him Jones has impressed them lately.
- If Steele Chambers has settled in at linebacker: "He has. And I think he's really done a good job." He says that decision was made in recent days. "I expect him to make an impact this season."
- Who's the biggest challenge in the Big Ten this season: "I think first off, it's the next opponent. For us, we try not to get too far down the road."
- Day says he thinks they should be able to put lower-body and thigh pads on earlier in camp because the team has had some lower-body bumps and bruises early in camp.
- He says running back is one of the most important positions when it comes to players putting the pads on. It's hard to learn a lot from them, he says, without pads on.
- "Denzel Burke, you can't tell he's a freshman. He walked in and competed right when he stepped on that field." He says he's created discipline and skill and has attacked every day. "A lot of confidence, but not over the top." He calls him a "serious guy."
- On the young cornerbacks: "The more depth you have, the more you can play those guys." ... "The more depth we have at that position, the better we're going to be."
- Day says it's important for the Buckeyes to figure out exactly who this offense is going to be this season. He says he woke up and thought about that driving over.
- He says Sevyn Banks has sat out the past couple of practices after "tweaking something."
- Day says a mature approach, time management, bringing guys along with them and high school coaches' thoughts on them are what he looks for in future captains when he's recruiting.
- He says the quarterback room needs "some cohesion," which is what he and Corey Dennis have tried to emphasize. He's talked with them about how three quarterbacks were needed the last time Ohio State won a national championship.
- Day says he trusts the defensive coaching staff to do their job. He'll make suggestions to them if he sees something in practice, but he lets Kerry Coombs, Larry Johnson, Al Washington and Matt Barnes run the defensive meetings rather than telling them what to do.
