It seemed like every student at Ohio State’s Student Appreciation Day wanted a photo or an autograph from Jeremiah Smith.
When Saturday’s practice at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center concluded and students were allowed to go onto the field to interact with the Buckeye players, a bevy of students immediately ran toward Smith, creating a massive crowd around Ohio State’s star wide receiver before he even finished stretching.

It took an autograph mob during Student Appreciation Day, but for the first time in his life, Jeremiah Smith is not open. pic.twitter.com/SoFab4nZ2g

With a police officer and Ohio State director of player development C.J. Barnett keeping watch, the crowd around Smith was peaceful but eventually had to be dispersed after some time so Smith could leave the field.
Gonna talk at starting noon Sunday on @971thefan about things I observed during the annual @OhioStateFB student appreciation day, but gotta show a few things now, including throng seeking @Jermiah_Smith1 autograph afterward before he "left the building." Crazy. pic.twitter.com/xegUBX0Zfu

The crowd Smith drew following Saturday’s scrimmage showcased his status as the new face of Ohio State football and as one of college football’s biggest superstars. That comes on the heels of a spectacular freshman season in which Smith caught 76 passes for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns. The last of those catches clinched a national championship for Ohio State when Smith hauled in a 56-yard deep ball from Will Howard with less than three minutes remaining, setting up a Jayden Fielding field goal that gave the Buckeyes the final three points of their 34-23 win over Notre Dame.
