The Ohio State women’s hockey team rolled in a non-conference clash against Robert Morris tonight. The lady Bucks had control of this one from the get go. Senior forward Kayla Sullivan put OSU on the board before the first minute wound off the clock.

The Buckeyes added to their lead a few minutes later as Danielle Gagne tallied her fourth goal of the season. She was assisted on the play by the hot hand of Taylor Kuehl (five points in as many games) and Julianna Iafallo.

The ladies continued to dominate in the middle period. Senior captain Sara Schmitt converted the Buckeyes’ first power play of the game. Sullivan was credited with the goal’s lone assist. The two reversed roles at the 13:14 mark. Sullivan chipped in her second goal of the game and Schmitt’s help.

Not content to rest on its laurels, Ohio State increased its lead in the waning seconds of the period. Melani Moylan demonstrated the most effective way to prevent an opponent cashing in on the power play, score shorthanded.

The Colonials’ Leah Carlson netted a shorty of her own midway through the third stanza, spoiling Stacy Danczak’s shutout bid. Despite that it was a solid outing for the Buckeyes’ senior tendy. She stopped 20 shots in her third consecutive start for Ohio State.

All told, six Buckeyes registered points in tonight’s contest. Multiple-point games were recorded by Sullivan (2-1--3), Schmitt (1-1--2), and Moylan (1-1--2). The lady Bucks outshot Robert Morris 42-21 in the contest.

Next up for Ohio State is a WCHA showdown against Minnesota-Duluth at the OSU Ice Rink. Games are scheduled for 6pm next Friday and Saturday night.

Buckeye Men Fall in Shillelagh Opener

The Ohio State men got behind early in this afternoon’s contest and weren’t able to recover. Western Michigan struck twice in the first period. JT Osborn drew first blood. Then Frederik Tiffels, who would be a thorn in the Buckeyes’ side throughout the game, recorded the first of his eventual three goals.

The Bucks didn’t go quietly. They made a run after the intermission break. Anthony Greco scored and unassisted power play marker. The goal is his team-leading sixth marker of the season. Unfortunately, the Broncos stretched their lead to two once again less than a minute later.

Still, OSU responded. Chad Niddery netted his second of the season with assists from linemates Christian Lampasso and Matt Johnson. The lunch pail line’s efforts would be the high water mark of the game for Ohio State. Western reeled off three more tallies in the third period, including the completion of Tiffels’ hat trick.

Matt Tomkins made 30 saves in the loss. The Buckeyes were outshot 36-22 in the game. Ohio State was 1 for 4 on their power play opportunities and 2 for 2 on the penalty kill.

The Bucks await the results of Union vs. Notre Dame. The Irish lead 2-0 at the moment. If they’re victorious then Ohio State will play the Dutchmen tomorrow afternoon at 4pm. If Union were to stage a comeback, the Bucks would face ND at 7:30 pm.
