It's Monday. Damn.
BUCKEYES AT THE COMBINE. Some quick hits from Indianapolis:
- Carlos Hyde posted a 4.66 unofficial 40-yard dash time. In doing so, he injured his hamstring and pulled out of the second attempt. He called it "a minor setback."
- Philly Brown ran an unofficial 4.37 in his first 40-yard dash attempt. He followed up with an unofficial 4.44. I've got a hunch he's faster than anybody reading this.
- Corey Linsley put up 36 reps on the bench press; Jack Mewhort a "mere" 28. Mike Mayock expects Mewhort to be drafted before the second round is over.
- Shazier showed up at a rock-solid 237 lbs (15 lbs heavier than expected), and NFL teams are excited. He too has a hamstring problem so he probably won't run the 40 today.
- Bradley Roby had some interesting words on his up-and-down season (hopefully Noah Spence is taking note):
“Me not playing that first game, my mindset in camp wasn’t where it should have been. I knew I wasn’t playing the first game, so I might have maybe not gotten as many reps as I normally would have. At corner, reps (are) everything, training your eyes, looking at the right places all the time, all those type of things. Kind of got away from that. Kind of undisciplined type of play I was playing at the beginning of the season.”
- The cornerback also didn't mince words on how he thinks athletes are compensated:
Roby on if college players are employees: "Definitely. How these colleges are running football programs now, it's just like the NFL."

Athletic scholarship a nice reward, no? "I don't think that's enough," Roby said. "You can get a regular scholarship as a regular student."
— Dave Briggs (@DBriggsBlade) February 23, 2014
Roby (cont): "You can't take anybody out to get food or go to the mall and get new shoes. It's like, 'Wow, where's all this money going.'"

Fair points from Roby. And since everybody pretty much knows where I stand on this issue, I'll spare my congregation the fire-and-brimstone sermon this morning.

Ohio State's Pro Day will be held on March 7th.
OHIO STATE BE CHEATING. According to The Lantern, Ohio State's... women's volleyball team(!?!?)... led the way with five of the 24 violations self-reported in the second half of 2013.
On the football front, Urban Meyer has always been one to play loose with the rules, and with the NCAA's draconian Tatgate sanctions officially off the books, OSU's frontman is officially up to his old tricks:
Reported June 27: The Compliance Office determined there to be seven impermissible phone calls to prospective student-athletes and/or their parents after an April 2013 review of phone records between Aug. 1, 2012, and March 1, 2013. The report states they were the result of inadvertent “pocket dials.”
Reported November 4: A member of the coaching staff was reported to have used a smokeless tobacco product during a game, violating NCAA bylaws.
Pocket dials and illicit dippers... please make sure Charles Robinson or George Dohrmann never get a hold of this report because those two true detectives would absolutely decimate the program we all hold close to our heart.
Secondly: WHAT KIND OF STUDENT PAPER SNITCHES ON THEIR OWN PROGRAM LIKE THIS? A bunch of glory-hounds over there at The Lantern, it would seem. These goofs are doing whatever it takes to SELL A PAPER. Absolutely shameful. Let's move on before I rupture all the coronaries behind my eyes.
ESPN COMPLIMENTS OHIO STATE. Have you ever sat back and contemplated how #blessed you are to be an Ohio State fan? ESPN crystallized it over the weekend, ranking Ohio State as the most stable program in the country:
The Buckeyes won at least 10 games in 15 of their past 21 seasons (victories in their 12-1 2010 season were later vacated), a stretch of consistent success unmatched in recent college football history. They not only hold the overall lead in winning percentage in that span but also rank as the most stable program by far, according to our analysis. Strong performances earned them more BCS bowl bids (10) than any other program, including a 2003 Fiesta Bowl victory over Miami for a national championship.
Lost season of 2011 aside, it's ridiculous of how good Ohio State has been for so long. Really not hard to see where the outside hate comes from when the facts are laid bare.
MIKE THOMAS IS STILL DOING THINGS. I have prophesied Mike Thomas to be Ohio State's next big thing, and it appears he's still destroying DBs in the WHAC:
When Thomas blows up next fall, I fully expect my Instagram scouting to be validated. Is Mike Mayock even on this grind yet? I doubt it.
Oh, and Mike could always play DB too if Ohio State ever found themselves in a pinch.
Those are two ice-cold one-handed snares. Damn, this kid is going to be good. (Cue people rushing to the comments with "LET'S WAIT TIL HE DOES IT ON THE FIELD!!!111"
