Learning To Block, Part 2

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I really would like to see the team improve its offensive line play, and sharing instructional videos on blocking techniques is just my way of pitching in. After all, if all we do here is complain about a problem and not try to do something about it, what good is that? To that end, I'd like to share another video this week, this time addressing the problem of taking on a bigger man.

Our instructor this week is former Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Ricky Siglar. Mr. Siglar is retired now, but spends quite a bit of time in various community development and youth programs. Obviously, after several years of playing in the NFL, he knows a little bit about blocking big men. OSU might face a few 300 pound behemoths on their road to (hopefully) BCS glory, so I thought it might be a good time for some tips on addressing that situation. Keeping those guys from clogging up the middle will help Pryor, Herron, Saine and company make more big plays down the field. It might also help keep my blood pressure down while I'm watching the game.

One other thing that I think is important is that a blocker needs to master the basics before moving on to the complex techniques. Once this method is learned, then the line might be ready for Siglar's Zone Blocking video. But let's make sure they can put a good hit on the first guy before they go searching for a second target.
