Quinn Ewers has been named the starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian had indicated Thursday that he was ready to decide who would be the team's lead signal caller. There were rumors on Friday morning that redshirt sophomore Hudson Card would take the mantle, but Sarkisian had other plans, announcing the Ohio State transfer as the starter on Friday.

Davis tweeted that Sarkisian's decision was relayed through a program spokesperson. The head coach was not made available to the media to discuss his decision, which surprised reporters like Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman.
How this came down today was odd. Texas brought three players to interviews. Then, just out of the blue, Texas SID John Bianco said he had a message from Sark. Quinn Ewers is the starter. You couldve hear a pin drop. Wow.

Sarkisian said Thursday that whoever wins the quarterback competition would immediately start taking reps with the first-team offense. With Ewers as the starter, Card is the presumed backup and will take snaps with the second team.
Ewers originally committed to Texas in August 2020 but ended up decommitting from the Longhorns later that year to become a Buckeye. Originally a member of the 2022 recruiting class, Ewers reclassified to the 2021 class as the No. 1 overall prospect. He arrived at Ohio State before that season in August and was in Columbus for four months before announcing his transfer to Texas on Dec. 12, 2021.
