The Cleveland Cavaliers are sporting a sparkling 44-10 record, best in the Eastern Conference and tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the best record in the NBA. The Cavaliers now have the 3rd shortest odds to win the NBA title, behind only OKC and Boston. Cleveland had 3 players represent the team in All-Star Weekend, Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Darius Garland. Jarrett Allen missed being an All-Star but is having an outstanding season.
The Cavaliers didn't stand pat on their roster before the trade deadline, and acquired DeAndre Hunter from Atlanta in exchange for Caris LeVert, Georges Niang, and some draft picks. By acquiring Hunter, the FO is hoping that Hunter will fill the important defensive wing that the team was needing. In addition, Javonte Green is headed to Cleveland after being released by the New Orleans Pelicans. Green was 2nd on NO in blocks and steals. Similar to Isaac Okoro in size, so with Okoro down with injury this could be a valuable pickup.
Cleveland is getting more and more national attention, and more nationally televised games. The team has had some injuries, namely Okoro and Dean Wade, but for the most part the "Core 4" of Mitchell, Garland, Allen, and Mobley have stayed relatively healthy. Max Strus, Ty Jerome, Sam Merrill, Jaylen Tyson, and Craig Porter have given the Cavs solid production. The Wine and Gold are one of the top 3 point shooting teams in the Association, and also are near the top in scoring PPG.
Coach Kenny Atkinson has to at least be a serious contender for COY. The team has a much different offensive look this season, with Atkinson favoring a more uptempo pace.
The Cavaliers are 5.5 games up on Boston and 8 on New York, so right now the team has a great opportunity to gain home court advantage in the Eastern playoffs with only 28 games remaining in the regular season.
