Buckeye excellence is not exclusive to the football field or the basketball court. Around the Oval is our way of keeping you informed of the amazing things happening with the other 34 varsity sports on campus.
Bucks in Britain
The Ohio State women's golf team took a summer trip this week. All six returning golfers traveled to Scotland to compete in the 2016 Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship, and have some fun along the way.

After two rounds of qualifying stroke play, the 144-player field was trimmed to 64, and two Buckeyes advanced to match play as rising seniors Katja Pogacar and Jessica Porvasnik made the cut. Porvasnik tied for 13th overall, earning the No. 15 seed in match play, while Pogacar finished qualifying tied for 36th.
While Pogacar fell in the first Round of 64 to Lena Schaeffner of Coastal Carolina, Porvasnik bested Missouri's Jessica Meek and then Italian Lucrezia Colombotto Rosso to advance to the final 16. Unfortunately, it was there that the Buckeye's run ended as she fell to Arizona State's Monica Vaughn, a rising senior who ended the 2015-16 NCAA season ranked No. 9.
For these student athletes, it was a valuable experience. The Buckeyes were able to compete against world class talent and for much of the team, it was a chance to play on a links style golf course for the first time.
Olympic Qualifiers
Former Ohio State national champion Brandon Wynn as well as upcoming Buckeye junior Sean Melton competed at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials this weekend.
Melton finished 12th overall in the all-around standings after posting top-10 finishes in two events – ninth on rings with a score of 59.550 and 10th on floor exercise with a score of 58.825. The Buckeye junior elected to compete in just three events on the final day.

Wynn had impressive finishes on rings, finishing fourth with a score of 61.175 and on parallel bars, finishing ninth with a score of 59.000. Like Melton, Wynn also chose to compete in just three events on Saturday as well.
U.S. Gymnastics also hosted 2016 P&G Championships for the junior divisions this weekend, and incoming Buckeye freshman Andrew Brower shined. The 18-year-old won a national title on pommel horse (age 17-18) with a score of 26.750 and claimed fifth place in the all-around competition with a score of 156.400.
