The Buckeyes landed the commitment of former Minnesota offensive tackle Phillip Daniels on Wednesday, giving OSU its first transfer portal commitment of the winter.
The Daniels File
- Year: Redshirt Sophomore
- Size: 6-5/315
- Pos: OT
- Previous School: Minnesota (2023-24)
- Stats: 4 starts at Minnesota (4 at RT in 2024)
Once Daniels entered the portal, there was little secret as to where the Cincinnati resident wanted to end up. Daniels grew up rooting for the Buckeyes as an Ohio kid, but wasn't offered by OSU out of high school. That changed following two seasons at Minnesota. Daniels started the final four games at right tackle in 2024 for the Gophers and was slated to return as a starter for the 2025 season. He visited the Buckeyes on Tuesday and didn't need to take any other visits in addition before knowing he wanted to play for the scarlet and gray a day later.
Daniels played 300 offensive snaps for Minnesota this season and turned in a 62.5 overall grade per Pro Football Focus. His pass blocking (65.4) and run blocking (66.7) were very similarly graded. He'll likely enter the 2025 campaign for OSU as a frontrunner to start at either left or right tackle for Ohio State. Daniels will have three seasons of eligibility remaining at OSU.
Per 247Sports' transfer portal rankings, the 6-foot-5, 315-pound Daniels is considered the No. 4 tackle in the portal. He was a three-star recruit as a high school prospect and had more than 20 Division I offers, mostly from Group of Five schools.
Daniels played his prep ball at Princeton High School, the same school that produced former Ohio State offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr., who is Daniels' cousin.
