Last year, local furniture chains Morris Home Furnishings and Ashley Furniture were scorched to the tune of $1.5 million after Ohio State won the College Football Playoff championship by seven points. Nearly 500 customers received free merchandise after the improbable marketing stunt paid off in their favor.
Not content with merely losing $1.5 million, the chain's vice president of marketing and advertising, Robert Klaben, told the Columbus Dispatch he'd like to be out even more this year, “We hope a championship season will result in us giving away more than $5 million in free furniture and mattresses this year.”
The barrier to free goods is tougher this year, however. Not only must Ohio State repeat as College Football Playoff champions, but they must match their winning margin of 22 points in the championship game in order for customers to cash in on the deal.
If you're in the market for new furniture and you're feeling really good about Ohio State's chances, it may be worth checking out. The offer runs on goods purchased from Aug. 26 to Sept. 1 and is only valid on purchases of $1,999 or more.
