Zak Herbstreit is headed home.

According to a report from Joey Kaufman of The Columbus Dispatch, a university spokesperson has confirmed that the Ohio State tight end was released from the Wexner Medical Center on Wednesday.

Herbstreit was admitted into the Wexner on Tuesday with an undisclosed health issue. Medical staff at the Ohio State hospital had reported that Herbstreit was in stable condition and was monitored and evaluated for the duration of his stay.

After Herbstreit was admitted, his father, Kirk Herbstreit, a former quarterback and captain of the Ohio State football team in the early 90s, tweeted his appreciation for all who reached out and expressed concern for Zak's well-being. Kirk's tweet also included a message from his son that added context to his hospital visit.

“I have had a bit of a setback these past couple of weeks. Not feeling right. Culminated with test results this past Friday that forced me into the hospital," Zak Herbstreit said. "I have some of the best cardiologists looking after me, and I am beyond appreciative. We are doing a number of tests and conjuring a plan to ensure that I will be able to be back to feeling normal again. I appreciate the overwhelming support over the past couple of days. I am feeling good and hope to be out of the hospital soon.”

A little over 24 hours later, Herbstreit is headed home.

Herbstreit arrived in Columbus as a preferred walk-on in 2021 and made his Ohio State debut in 2022, recording snaps in the Buckeyes' matchups with Toledo, Wisconsin and Rutgers in the first half of the season.

The timetable of his return to the program remains unclear, as Kirk Herbstreit's tweet indicated there would be "a long journey ahead" for the Nashville, Tennesee, native. Nevertheless, the Ohio State football program has issued its full support for the 6-foot-2, 243-pound tight end as his recovery continues.
