Gareon Conley’s NFL comeback attempt is over.

Just over a month after signing with the Dallas Cowboys, Conley was released by the team on Sunday after informing them he would retire.

In a statement posted to social media, Conley said he decided to retire due to leg pain that has plagued him since his first NFL season.

Conley, who has not played in an NFL game since 2019, signed with the Cowboys in June after playing for the UFL’s DC Defenders this spring. His retirement comes after he participated in the Cowboys’ first three days of training camp.

A first-round pick by the then-Oakland Raiders in 2017, Conley spent less than three seasons with the Raiders before they traded him to the Houston Texans in 2019. After missing the entire 2020 season with an ankle injury, Conley became an NFL free agent and went unsigned for three years before joining the Cowboys this summer.

Conley ends his NFL career having played in 31 games from 2017-19 (23 for the Raiders, eight for the Texans), in which he recorded 94 tackles, 29 pass breakups and four interceptions with one touchdown.
