Ohio State blows out Indiana, 38-15. Now, it's time to do the same to That Team Up North.
Last night the men's hockey Buckeyes settled for a tie after their relentless assault was thwarted by the heroic effort of Rensselaer goalie Chase Perry. The Engineers and the Bucks dueled to a tie again on Saturday, though Perry was not called on nearly so often.
Scoring by Period | 1 | 2 | 3 | OT | Final | SO |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Rensselaer | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 |
RV Ohio State | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 |
RPI took an early lead courtesy of an Ohio State mistake. Less than a minute into the contest a Buckeye turnover led to Evan Tironese slapping the puck past OSU goalie Sean Romeo. The remainder of the opening period was a largely uneventful.
Pd | Time | Buckeye Goal Scorer (Assists) |
---|---|---|
2 | 2:16 | Christian Lampasso (Luke Stork, John Wiitala) |
Hard work by the Bucks in the opening minutes of the middle frame knotted the score at 1-1. The team pressured the Engineers deep in their zone. OSU forced a turnover which Luke Stork directed to the net. Christian Lampasso outwaited RPI goalie Chase Perry and finished the play with his first goal of the season.

Ohio State turned the juice up in the third period. The Bucks outshot Rensselaer 15-6 in the final 20 minutes, including a 12-0 stretch, but they did not seriously rattle Perry and the teams headed to overtime for the second consecutive game. RPI edged OSU in shots in the extra session, 3-1, but neither side gained an outright win.
For the second straight night the game officially ended in a tie. The teams contested a shootout just for the heck of it. Tanner Laczynski won the skills competition for Ohio State in the third round.
While they were not as prolific as last night, the Buckeyes edged the Engineers in shots once again, 28-23. Both squads were 0-for-3 on the power play. The tie brings OSU's season record to 1-1-2.
Hot goalie aside, unless RPI turns out to be a sleeper candidate for the ECAC title, this wasn't a great week for the Bucks. They look to rebound with a more productive effort next week at Massachusetts (2-1-0).
