Coming into today’s contest between Ohio State and Minnesota-Duluth the Bulldogs had scored more than three goals on just two other occasions. The Buckeyes had owned the second period, outscoring opponents by a combined 31-14 mark.

But there was some kind of freaky Friday business going on in Duluth. UMD burned the Bucks four times today. Three of the Bulldogs’ goals came in the middle frame.

Minnesota-Duluth 1 3 0 4

Katerina Mrazova put Minnesota-Duluth ahead four minutes into the contest. OSU ramped up the pressure, particularly over the last half of the first period. The Buckeyes outshot their hosts 16-9 in the opening 20 minutes but Bulldog goalie Jessica Convery shut the door. UMD led 1-0 at the break.

Buckeye Goal Scorer (Assists) Pd Time
Tatum Skaggs (Lauren Boyle, Emma Maltais) 2 5:55

Tatum Skaggs briefly drew the Bucks even in the second period. The freshman’s seventeenth goal of the season came at the 5:55 mark with assists from Lauren Boyle and Emma Maltais. But three minutes later a power play tally restored Minnesota-Duluth’s lead. The Bulldogs reeled off two more goals before the horn to take a 4-1 lead into the third period.

Ohio State fired off another 14 shots in the final frame. Nothing got by Convery, though. The rookie netminder finished with 38 saves. Kassidy Sauve stopped 24 shots for the Buckeyes. She and the Buckeyes take their sixth loss of the season. OSU drops to 17-6-4 overall and 10-3-4-3 in the WCHA, but the Bucks remain in second place in the conference.

OSU and UMD meet again tomorrow at 4pm ET. Ohio State will look to rebound and avoid being swept for a second time this season. The game can be streamed live online via NCHC TV for a fee.
